Citrus x meyeri or commonly called the Meyer Lemon tree is a gorgeous evergreen citrus tree originally from China that is a hybrid between a common lemon tree and a mandarin orange tree. It was first discovered and sent to the United States in 1908 by Dutch horticulturist and botanist Frank Meyer who was working for the United States Department of Agriculture.

Unfortunately, the original Meyer Lemon Trees were found to be susceptible to a devastating virus called Citrus Tristeza and eventually became symptomless carriers of the said virus, which infected and killed millions of citrus trees across the United States and all over the world. Because of this, most Meyer lemon trees have to be destroyed. A surviving and virus-free Meyer lemon tree was then discovered by Don Dillon in 1950 and was later certified and released by the University of California as the Improved Meyer Lemon Tree in 1975.

The Improved Meyer Lemon Tree is cold hardy and best grows in US Department of Agriculture USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11. It is fairly vigorous, shrubby, and somewhat small in size upon reaching maturity standard Meyer lemon trees can grow as tall as 6 to 10 while the dwarf lemon tree can grow up to 4 to 6 in height.

This lemon tree variety has a spreading habit and is nearly thornless making it a great citrus tree to plant if you have kids, be it indoors or outdoors. This citrus tree blooms purple-tinted flowers all year round but blooms are more concentrated in spring or fall. The fragrant blooms then turn to medium-sized, orange-yellow, juicy sweet-tart lemons that are in season in fall/spring.

They bear low-seeded pink-fleshed lemon fruits that have green-stripped rind while still immature.

The Pink Variegated Lemon Tree, oftentimes called the variegated Eureka lemon tree or pink-fleshed Eureka lemon, is a cultivar of lemon botanically named Citrus limon “Eureka Variegated Pink”. It was first discovered in 1931 as a sport that grew on a regular Eureka Lemon tree at a home garden in Burbank, California.

This citrus tree is drought tolerant and suitable for outdoor planting in USDA plant hardiness zones 8 to 11. When planted in the ground it can grow 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. If you live in an area where winter temperatures won’t allow you to grow the Eureka pink lemon tree in the ground, you can always get a dwarf Pink Variegated Lemon Tree and grow it in a container indoors. Position the tree near a sunny, south-facing window to supplement it with its much-needed sunlight during winter. When all danger of frost has passed you can move the potted lemon tree to your deck or patio where it can stay until next winter.

Pink Variegated lemon trees make fine ornamental trees because of their glossy, evergreen, green and cream-colored foliage and fragrant white blooms that are in season in spring or fall. They bear low-seeded pink-fleshed lemon fruits that have green-stripped rind while still immature. As the fruits ripen, they lose their stripes and the rinds turn yellow with pink oil glands.

What makes this tree even more likable is its adaptability to different soil types and growing conditions. It is also resistant to pests or diseases.

The Ponderosa Lemon Tree (botanical name Citrus x pyriformis) is a chance seedling derived from a hybrid of pomelo and citron first discovered in the 1880’s. Although initially believed to be a hybrid of lemon and citron, further analysis proved the variety to contain only pomelo and citron DNA. The Ponderosa Lemon was then named and launched for commercial purposes in the 1900?ÇÖs.

This lemon tree is a slow-growing, evergreen citrus tree with long, glossy leaves. When planted outdoors in USDA plant hardiness zones 8 to 11, the Ponderosa Lemon Tree can grow as tall as 24 feet. The tree can be kept smaller when planted in a pot indoors. Both the standard and dwarf Ponderosa Lemon Tree have a rounded top and medium-thick branches full of spines.

Like most lemon or lime trees, Ponderosa lemon trees are cold sensitive and frost tender when grown in areas colder than USDA planting zone 8. While potted trees can grow to fruit-bearing ages in colder areas, they need additional light during the cold season and protection from freezing by overwintering indoors.

These lemon citrus trees are often grown as ornamental plants for their beautiful white and purple-tinged flowers that grow simultaneously among yellow fruits and dark green leaves. Moreover, since the fruits and blooms are produced at the same time, you will be mesmerized by the sublime scent of the flowers mixed with the sweet scent of the lemons. This combination is rarely found in other fruit trees. Also, Ponderosa lemons can be kept on the tree for months without deteriorating and losing fruit quality.

The Lisbon lemon is one of the most popular varieties globally, especially in hot regions. They are native to Australia, but they have Portuguese descent as well. The Lisbon lemon tree belongs to the Rutaceae family, and it grows on thorny evergreen trees.

The size of the fruit is about 2 to 3 inches, which is medium-sized for a lemon, and the trees can reach as high as 15 feet. Like many lemon varieties, the lemons are also slightly tapered towards the ends, and they have an oblong shape. The peel of the lemon is bright yellow, and the flesh tends to be a pale yellow or a green-yellow color. It is divided into 10 or 11 segments, and there are usually very few seeds or none at all.

The flowers of the Lisbon lemon tree are white, and they bloom in the spring. It produces fruit throughout the year, but they mostly grow in the winter and beginning of spring.

Lisbon lemon trees are best suited for USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11, but if they are kept indoors during the winter, they can grow in zones 4 through 10 as well.
