The Clementine Tree is a small, easy-to-grow citrus that produces sweet, easy-peeling fruit that is juicy and seedless. Clementine Trees reach a mature height of between 8 to 10 feet and a width of about 6 feet. These trees can be kept even smaller by pruning. The Clementine Tree is a moderately fast grower, and its tasty red-orange fruit matures from June through August.

Clementine Trees can be grown outdoors in USDA Zones 8 – 11, or in a container that is moved indoors for the winters in USDA Zones 4 – 11. Their small stature makes them an ideal patio citrus tree and their fragrant white blooms, followed by smooth, bright orange fruit make them a decorative specimen in any home. If you live in an area where you can grow a Clementine Tree in the ground, it’s a great choice for a focal point in your garden.

The Brown Select Satsuma Tree with the botanical name Citrus unshiu ‘Brown Select’, is an evergreen mandarin tree of the family Rutaceae. This citrus tree has a dense growth habit and is less weepy than other Satsuma varieties. It has a crown covered with glossy, dark green, broadly lance-shaped, fragrant leaves. This medium-sized Satsuma tree has droopy branches that are nearly thornless.

The Brown Select Satsuma mandarin trees are originally from a group of open-pollinated ‘Kimbrough’ seedlings gathered at the Citrus Research Station in the1960s and chosen during post-freeze appraisal after 1983. The variety was field tested under the label LA 4-40 at Louisiana State University’s AgCenter and was later named Brown’s Select in honor of Ralph Brown, citrus researcher and head of the Citrus Research Station from 1948 until 1977.

Like other Satsuma trees, the Brown Select fruit trees are cold hardy; they flourish in full sunlight but can tolerate temperatures below freezing for a couple of hours.

The Brown Select tangerine tree produces fragrant white blooms that turn into fruit buds with fruits concentrated in clusters on or along the branches. The satsuma fruits are medium to large sized, sweet tasting, and juicy. The fruit is mostly seedless and can be freshly eaten and enjoyed slice by slice right after picking from the tree.

The Dancy Tangerine was once one of the most popular citrus fruit varieties commercially sold in the US. It is now mostly sold by nurseries for backyard planting. The Dancy Tangerine has also played a big role in the citrus industry, by contributing to the parentage of premium citrus varieties like the Minneola and Orlando tangelos, Frua and Fortune mandarins, and the Dweet and Mency tangors.

The Dancy Tangerine tree origins can be traced back to a seedling tree grown in the orchard of Colonel Dancy of Orange Mills, Florida in 1867. The seed of this tangerine tree was from the Moragne tangerine tree brought to Florida from Tangier, Morocco before 1843. This is the source of the name tangerine, which means from Tangiers.

The Dancy Tangerine Tree is an evergreen, vigorous growing tree that is large compared to other tangerine trees. This citrus tree has an upright-spreading growth habit, is densely foliated, and is nearly thornless. It is typically productive but with a tendency to be alternate-bearing.

Both the Standard and dwarf tangerine trees produce fruits that are 2¼ – 2½ inches in diameter with rind that is deep red-orange in color, leathery and easily peels gaining them the names zipper-skin tangerine and kid-glove orange.

The Murcott tree, also known as the Honey Tangerine Tree, is favored for its sweet flavor, and extremely juicy flesh. The fruit is so juicy, that it has become a favorite for fresh-squeezed juice at home. The skin of the medium-sized Murcott is deep orange, and the flesh and juice are a vibrant red-orange color.

The skin is slightly dimpled and fairly easy to peel, making the Murcott Honey Tangerine fine for eating out of hand. Murcotts can contain some seeds, and other tangerines may be a bit easier to peel, but the Murcott is a great choice if you want both a good eating tangerine, and one that is great for juicing.

Murcotts (or Honey Tangerines) stand out for their abundant amount of juice, their dark orange skin, bright red-orange juice, and refreshing sweet flavor.
